I bought mine yesterday, even though I make my own laundry detergent. It's always a good idea to have some spare detergent around just in case you run out and can't make more.

Summer Activities for Little to No $$

I already did a post about some fun summer activities to do with your children (see here and here), but here are a few more ideas from Being Frugal is Fabulous.

Movies

Regal Movies are free but you must get tickets at the Box Office the day of the show. Showings are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Cinemark Get 10 shows for $5.00 when you pay in advance or $1.00 per show when you pay at the Box Office. Showings are weekday mornings.

AMC $1.00 movies on Wednesdays, proceeds go to charity.

Rave Motion Pictures Free movies every Tuesday and Wednesday, seats are given on a first come, first serve basis.

Dickinson Theaters Most locations offer a package of 8 movies for $12.50. Dates vary by location.

Marcus Theaters All seats are $2.50 and include free popcorn. Showings are on Wednesdays and Thursday mornings.

Kerasotes Theaters Six movies will be shown for free Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Bowling

Kids Bowl Free Kids can receive 2 free games every day.

Tony’s Pizza -Free Bowling Look for specially marked boxes of Tony’s Pizza to get a free game of bowling with purchase.

Kids Reading Programs

Barnes & Noble Kids (grades 1-6) can earn a free book when they read 8 books of their choosing.

Half Price Books Kids 12 and under can earn a free $3.00 Half Price book for each week that they read at least 15 minutes every day.

Borders Kids read 8 books of their choosing and then they will save up to 50% on selected items.

Pottery Barn Kids PBK holds story time every Tuesday from 11:00-11:30 (check your local store to confirm the time). Once kids attend story time 5 times, they receive a free gift.

Bookworm Wednesdays Participating movie theaters will give free admission to a selected children’s movie when they show a completed book report.

Misc.

Local Events Search the Yahoo Events and Things To Do Calendar. Just enter your city and the type of event you are looking for. I found many fun free things to do in my local town that I didn’t know about.

Free Attractions This database lists free attractions around the country. I found out about some free attractions near us that I didn’t know about!

BOA Free Museums If you have a Bank of America Credit, Debit or ATM card, you can get free admission to participating museums, zoos and science centers the first weekend of every month.

Target Museums Target sponsors free admission to over 40 museums.

Too Many Toys, or "Mom! I'm Bored!"

Do you have so many toys that they are spilling out of their containers? Are your children still bored? Odds are, the answer to both of these questions is "yes"! It's a common problem. Your children are bored with their toys, so you (or the Grandparents) get some new ones. But there are other, more cost effective solutions to this problem.

First, take a look at the toys you have. Are they open-ended? By that I do not mean to imply that all you have are tubes with no tops or bottoms, though that would be an excellent open-ended toy. Generally speaking, if all your child can do is push a button and watch the toy do whatever it is the toy does, it is not an open-ended toy. If, however, your child can do a trillion and one different things with it (about anything your child could imagine), then you have yourself an open-ended toy. These are the toys you want to buy your children, because they will last longer and they will grow with your child, so they will remain interesting for a longer period of time.

So! Take an inventory of your toys and keep only those toys that are open-ended. (Unless, of course, your child really loves one of the close-ended toys!) After you have separated your toys, your child is still bound to get bored. My first suggestion is to do as any good child care center would do. Only put out those toys that currently hold your child's interest or is something that may become interesting. If your child has been looking at all of the bugs that are out because it's Spring, get out those plastic bugs. Maybe you could put out some fake flowers, magnifying glasses and other Spring or bug related things. If trains or animals are of interest, put those toys out! When you notice your child hasn't played with a toy for a few days, put it away and try something new. When you put those bugs out again, you'll be amazed how enthused your child will be. It's almost like getting brand new toys without the cost!

You can store the toys you aren't using in plastic bins. Consider grouping toys based on type or theme. That way you can bring out a box of cooking supplies and fake food for a special treat on a rainy day.

Another way to get "new" toys without paying a cent is to get together with other families with young children. Each family can put together a toy kit, filled with toys their children are not currently using, that can be passed around to the other families in the group. The kits can rotate through the families at a set time determined by the parents. This way others can enjoy their "new" toys, while the original owners don't have to officially give them up. It is important that whenever you decide to get rid of toys or lend them out, that your children are consulted and their "okay" is given. This may be tricky for some, but it creates a great learning opportunity. When you decide to officially get rid of close-ended toys or toys that have been outgrown, remember that you can donate those items to less fortunate children. Please do NOT simply throw them away.

Finally, don't forget that you have untapped toys all around your house. Below is a short list of household items that are open-ended, cheap, and your children will LOVE them! Just to jump start your thinking...

*Empty paper towel rolls
*Plastic bowls
*A real tea set (for older children)
*Measuring cups
*Pillows
*Blankets/Sheets
*Diapers that no longer fit are great for baby dolls

Trying to reign in your spending because of the economic crisis? If so, you are at the right blog! If you are using the coupon advice found on this blog and those listed under my blog faves, that's fantastic! But there are other ways to save money as well.

For instance, think about what you spend money on that you could make do without or make your own. I make my own laundry detergent. Get the recipe here. It's really easy and cost effective. My friend started doing this because she uses cloth diapers and needed a soft detergent. At first, I thought that making your own laundry soap was taking it a little bit too far, but I finally gave it a try and I love it! The ingredients are simple (Borax, Arm & Hammer washing soda, Fels Naptha soap, and water), it doesn't take too long to make, one batch lasts for a long time, and it leaves your clothes feeling very soft. This is especially great if you have young children with allergies to most commercial detergents. Instead of buying expensive brands, just use this. It's uses are not limited to children though. I use if for all of our laundry.

Bonus to this...it's environmentally friendly!

Use the lists of weekly grocery deals on this site to compile your grocery list. You may need to go to more than one store to get the very best deals, and it is worth it if you take this extra step. So compile your lists and the corresponding coupons for each store. This way, when you go you know exactly what you are getting and you will be less likely to stop for things you don't need.

This method will work well if you prepare and understand a few key things. First, items at any given store will go on sale on a twelve week rotation. For instance, one week might be a meat week, while another is a canned goods week. Keep track of what is on sale when. That way you will know when it will next be on sale. The key is to stock up enough on the items that are on sale to last you for the next three months. I admit that this is tricky in the beginning, and I ended up spending a hefty sum that first month. So watch your budget! But now that we have a nice little storage, I only need to buy items that are on sale. I will periodically give you examples of the savings that I have scored. A couple weeks ago I paid $2.42 at Target for a sale that rang up for around $15. I took advantage of some deals at CVS recently, got three boxes of cereal, toothpaste and a toothbrush and paid $5.60 out of pocket and received $5 in Extra Care Bucks! This works, so stick with it!
